a gift for christmas December 24, 2011

A friend asked me a while ago what I want for Christmas. I spontaneously answered: that all the wars would end.

Indeed, this is a gift I - and the world - would like to receive.
Christmas is somehow supposed to be happiest time/day of the year, where we gather with our loved ones and share food and love and so on. But to me it seems like the biggest lie in the world. Maybe because I have never had much of a family tradition about this thing; maybe because people spend so much money on buying gifts that nobody wants; or maybe because it's a good excuse to shut your doors, windows and eyes from all those millions who have nothing but misery for this very day - and in your warm, safe, overfurnished and overpaid house pretend that misery doesn't exist.

So unless you can give me the world where everyone is happy and caring on every single day of the year and every day of their lives, I don't really want this one day of pretending that everything is all right, when actually it isn't.
