Going through ancient Myspace messages, I found a several years old letter from an amazing musician and soul - Emily A. Saaen. Her words have helped me a lot and they still have a meaning. I think these words are golden just the way the are - and timeless and valuable at any moment for any person. That's why I want to share them with you. I hope she won't mind!
Hello Haldjas, nice to meet you (:
It's 6:30 in the morning here, so I'll be quick (and messy, yes). (:
I used to work as a web/polygraphy designer with an illusion, that it gives me money for music, but eventually it turned out, that I didn't have any time for any music and practically lost my eyesight. Since then - and for a long time already - I don't have any other job but musical ones. Own music, side projects, session singing and playing, recording and mixing, arranging, production, vocal coaching etc. - all this is very interesting and exciting, letting me to develop essential skills, keeping me and my cat fed and interested in life, and making me happy (:
If music is what you want to do in life - do it. Vary tasks. Learn from others. Help those who seek your help. Teach those who ask a lesson from you - even if you don't think you've reached a decent level required for teaching. All teachers were students some time ago (:
Show only final results of your work to others. Finish what you've started. I say it again - finish what you've started! Music (and pretty much the rest of the world around us) is not about inspiration, it's about an iron ass.
Don't explain yourself to those who criticize your work - thank them, if their opinion means something to you. And ignore them, if they're just random lazy nose-picking homemade geniuses, who'd have done everything inside out, if they would be able to do anything at all (:
Spend every day doing something to become a better person, every day let go of one flaw of your personality - what irritates you in others should give you an idea what you need to cut off of your own self (:
And most important - never pontificate at 6:30 after you've written a New Year musical school play scenario and about to drop dead (:
With that you'll be safe and sound!
All the best,
Emily
